10 Tips All Tights Wearers Must Know

Whether you go for sheer, opaque, ribbed, dotted, or metallic, this tight wearer's guide will keep your tights on-trend and snag-free.

Don’t be afraid of color

Brightly colored tights can add a pop of color to any outfit, according to the fashion blog manrepeller. However, if you wear tights that aren’t black, make sure the rest of your look is neutral—like army green tights with a black dress—or wear the same color as your tights for a head-to-toe monochromatic look.  Keep in mind that if you go bold with your tights color, all eyes will be drawn to your legs.

Know when to wear opaque

The shorter your hemline, the more opaque your tights need to be. “By wearing thicker tights, you’ll not only visually elongate your gams but also minimize the risk of showing an inevitable run,” says fashion editor Kasey Rowe on the Rue Now blog. Few people know that there’s an industry term for the opaqueness of tights, called a “denier” number. The higher the number, the more opaque the tights are. Generally, opaque tights have a denier of 40 or more; a denier of less than 30 is likely to be sheer. Sheer tights are fine when you’re wearing knee-high boots and showing only a sliver of leg. These fashion hacks can make you look expensive.

Check for damages

To ensure that your outfit looks sophisticated, do a once-over to check that your tights are in good shape. Before put them on, examine them closely for any unsightly runs or holes. If you see even the tiniest snag, don’t kid yourself that it won’t become a shredded mess before the end of the day. The safer choice: Choose a fresh pair.

Make them match

If you’re not going for that isolated pop of color on the legs and you’re not sure how to coordinate, here’s a good rule to remember: Match your tights to the color of your shoes, or to the predominant color of the outfit you’re wearing to ensure that you look put-together. Here’s how to accessorize your outfit like a boss.

Know how to stop a run

If you’re out and about and notice that your tights have a run, break out some clear nail polish or hairspray. According to rockettes.com, a blog dedicated to dancers who high-kick in tights on a nightly basis, applying these products will stop the hole from getting any bigger. Here are more fast fixes for frustrating winter fashion problems.

Wash them wisely

Of course, hand washing is the best way to wash your tights. The more wear and tear you put on the fibers, the more likely they are to run. However, if you don’t have time to do a dedicated hand wash at the sink, put your tights in a mesh laundry bag and wash them the delicate cycle so they don’t develop snags in the washing machine.

Never put them in the dryer

Rockettes.com also notes “hot dryers can damage the elasticity of your tights and weaken the fibers that prevent runs.” Make sure to always air-dry your tights instead.

Buy a size up

The smaller your tights are, the more pressure you place on the fibers and the more likely they are to snag and rip. Instead, get a size up from the one you typically wear. And if it makes sense for your body type, consider control-top tights, like Spanx. They’ll act as a body shaper and also tend to hide underwear lines. Need to ditch a pair of old, worn out tights?

Try freezing your tights

This sounds like an odd tip, but wait till you try it. According to refinery29.com, freezing your tights before wearing them for the first time may extend their lifespan. “When you buy a new pair of tights, run them under water for a few seconds, squeeze out the excess, then freeze them overnight in a plastic bag,” writes Leann Duggan. Let them gradually unfreeze before wearing. Don’t miss these other tricks of the trade to make your clothes last longer

.

You can go toeless

If you’re aching to wear open-toe booties or sandals but still want the look of tights on your legs, there’s a solution for that—open toe tights. According to an article on BeautyXpose, they are regular tights that typically stop mid foot or ankle, to allow your toes to emerge without the weird seam of tights over them. Just make sure if you’re baring your tootsies that they’re ready for prime time.

Sheer tights

fashion tights skirt dress high heels

Sheer tights or not?

Transparent flesh-colored tights have a reputation that sticks to their skin: that of being somewhat matronly and not really trendy. However, these tights are not to be banished from our wardrobes… if they are well chosen. Choose sheer flesh-toned and matte tights. These garments embellish the legs, highlight them and even camouflage their small flaws. Matte flesh-toned tights are nearly invisible: if you choose the right shade, they will be indistinguishable from your skin. In that case, they envelop the legs and help complete an outfit. You can opt for more or less opaque tights. Do note, however, that the more transparent the tights… the more fragile they are.

To make the best choice, combining practicality and aesthetics, always remember to check the opacity indicator, specified your tights’ packaging. The higher the index, the more opaque the tights. Sheer tights have an index between 10 and 30 denier. Tights with an index between 10 and 15 denier are perfect for the summer, because they are truly very thin. Thicker, 20 to 30 denier stockings are semi-transparent and ideal for mid-season. Tights with an index greater than 50 denier are very thick tights designed to cover the legs in winter. They are more visible than low-index tights… but can look great if worn with a midi dress and pretty mid-calf or thigh-high boots.

Our advice for choosing sheer tights

So you think you’re ready to choose tights? Let’s make sure we have thought of everything. The first point to review is the sizing. That’s right: choosing the right size of tights is essential. Too-big tights are not very aesthetic, because folds will form in the knees and on the legs, while with too-small tights… a tear is guaranteed. Take your height and weight into account so you don’t go wrong. Tights are rated from size 1 to 6, size 1 corresponding to a S, size 2 and 3 to an M or for tall and slender women and sizes 4 to 6 for curvier body types.

The second parameter to take into consideration: the color of the tights. If you opt for flesh-toned tights, as mentioned above, follow your complexion. Do not hesitate to test a color sample, available in stores, or to slip your hand into the tights while stretching them slightly. This will show you the tone of the stockings on your legs. Does the color blend in with your skin? Perfect, these tights are for you. Maybe you prefer to choose sheer black tights? Let’s answer that question next.

How to dress up your legs with sheer black tights

Transparent black tights are a must-have in your wardrobe. Resolutely chic and perfectly complementing the curves of the legs, under a pretty fitted dress or a pencil skirt they are sure to give you a girl-boss allure. They can also create a

glamorous look
if you pair them with a mini skirt, high-waist skirt, shorts or a sweater dress. Sheer black tights are not difficult to wear: we generally consider that they can be worn under all outfits and complement all colors. They are the most modern stockings in our selection!

A subtle blend of transparency and creativity

Our advice: avoid patterns on patterns. To reveal all their beauty, fashion stockings must be worn with understated outfits, either plain or with very discreet patterns. The ultimate fashion faux-pas to avoid is wearing patterned polka dot tights under a plaid dress or skirt. This outfit is not very harmonious, because it sends too much information. So, keep it simple in order to shine in your fashion tights!

Candid amateur pantyhose legs 17

fashion tights skirt dress high heels
Ever been nosy about hosiery (you know, the what’s what and when to wear it)? Good! We’ve compiled the official guide to all things legwear—from sheer hose to heavy tights and the dos and don’ts that define them.
Leggings vs. tights: Though sometimes similar in appearance, leggings and tights are not the same. Those spandex heroes we call leggings might be what we reach for on weekends but don’t belong beneath flirty frocks and skirts. Instead, opt for tights, which come in an array of colors (neutrals like black, navy and charcoal are essential for cooler weather) and even prints (hello polka dot!) that play up a put-together look when the weather prevents you from going bare-legged.

Pantyhose: The more sheer and lightweight counterpart to tights is the reigning champion at concealing anything you don’t want to show off on your legs. The best part? They’ll lend clever coverage that’s less detectable and won’t distract from your look.

SO IS PANTYHOSE STILL IN STYLE?

Yes! Many among us aren’t so quick to embrace the change of seasons that brings about those leg-exposing skirts and dresses. The solution? Pantyhose can be a great way to smooth over those gams. Look for styles that are as light and neutral-looking as possible, avoiding any versions with opaqueness, white undertones or shimmer. Also look for quality versions with reinforced toe-boxes.
tylist Tip: Keep in mind pantyhose is most appropriate with dressier styles (think of tights with a houndstooth wool skirt in the fall or opaque hose with a wrap dress for a spring event) and definitely not to be paired with sandals or open-toed footwear.

LEG-CONSCIOUS ALTERNATIVES

Having a handle on hosiery doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll want to reach for it at every opportunity—and that’s okay! Hosiery alternatives like maxi and midi length skirts remove the need to add coverage to your legs; plus, they’re super-easy to style. Wide-leg palazzo pants, gauchos and culottes also channel breezy vibes without showing too much leg.

Colour pantyhose tights

fashion tights skirt dress high heels

If you still think that colored pantyhose is an object from the wardrobe of small girls or young schoolgirls, we hasten to disprove you: women's colored pantyhose is a super-trend that allows adding a bright note to any, even the most reserved outfit.

The myth that colorful and fantasy pantyhose can only be worn by those who possess perfectly even and slender legs has been debunked for a long time - properly selected tights can visually make your legs more elegant. About what to wear colored pantyhose, how to choose the right shades and how to correct small defects of a figure with the help of figures and textures, read in our article.

Color monochrome tights: we combine correctly

No matter how strict your style of clothes, do not limit yourself exclusively to corporal and black versions: the first has long been a real "anti-trend" and fell out of favor with all stylists, while the latter may treacherously emphasize the uneven legs. Here are some tips for choosing a bright accessory:

If you do not dare to bright colors and just started trying on a trendy trend, choose quiet, reserved shades: chocolate, graphite, gray, terracotta, bottle green, dark blue.

The more dense and matte will be women's colored pantyhose, the more expensive and stylish your image will be, moreover, it is these models that build and hide the small flaws of your legs. Colored pantyhose, precisely selected in the shade of shoes (shoes or ankle boots) can visually make your legs longer. Very beautiful look color tights of blue, burgundy, reddish-brown, gray in combination with suede shoes of the same shade.

Black monophonic dress in combination with black shoes - such a restrained set will be an excellent background for experiments with color. Finish the image of a small accessory in the tone of stockings: handbag, belt, necklace or brooch.

An interesting effect can be obtained by combining women's colored pantyhose with clothes decorated with ornaments. Choose the tights of one of the shades of the ornament of your dress.

Do not choose the main shade in the ornament: let your pantyhose "support" the color of the small elements of the outfit - the outfit will be more complex and interesting.

Fashionable style solution, which is often found in the photo in fashion blogs: combine in one tone pantyhose and skirt. Purple, brown, gray, muffled-red are the favorites of the upcoming season.

Wear women's colored pantyhose in tone to a knitted top or turtleneck. Complete the set with a skirt, jacket or jacket and shoes with a stable heel - an outfit for a walk on a warm autumn day is ready

For "advanced" bearers of colored tights, there are several ideas of their fashionable sound: try to wear color-blocking - combine three colors in one outfit(top, skirt or shorts and tights). Successful color combinations look for outfit of fashionable bloggers. Try and color total-look, combining tights with clothes and shoes of the same shade.
